[Biz ideas]: How do I figure out if a problem is significant enough to solve?

Should I directly ask people in my target market if that problem is a major annoyance for them, or should I have interviews with them without bringing up the problem and seeing if they bring it up?

YC lectures say you shouldn't directly ask, but I think that some problems are indeed major pain paints but are taken for granted, and thus they don't get brought up. What are your thoughts?
