At a few different startups I've worked at, and some of the larger companies, the COO position has always been filled by radically different people.
In some cases the COO was treated as the Chief of Product who made product direction decisions.
In another case, the COO was the head of legal for the entire company
In yet another, it was a business consultant (focusing on improving processes), who, after consulting for years, cut a deal to be made an executive and owner of the company.
Basically, there's no consistency on what a COO is or does as far as Im aware.
If there even is a clearly defined role for this, what is a COO actually supposed to do..?
