Opinions! Kickstarter vs. Shopify for Preorders

My product will only start shipping Q3 next year. I had planned for a Kickstarter in Q1, but now I'm reconsidering just using a Shopify page.
Why do people use Kickstarter? I keep hearing that for a successful campaign, you need to actively create your own leads via ad campaigns. If I need to generate my own leads, why not just set up a pre-order site on Shopify? I'm curious if people have experience in making this choice for their product.
