Which is the better option for monetizing a web app? Ads or Subscriptions?

I'm making a simple reading web app and I'm trying to figure out how to monetize. I could implement a subscription system, or I could use ads, probably Google Adsense. I honestly don't want to deal with maintaining a database of users and paying the fees that come with that, but on the other hand, ads require a lot of viewers to generate decent revenue. What's the better option?
