Are Surveys meant to expensive?

I have an issue. I've calculated the costs of a survey and it seems to be expensive for only 50 or so responses.

It's not that I don't have the money to pay for it but how does one go about reducing the costs of vital expenses?

Should I just close my eyes and see it as a sunk cost or should I try as much as possible at the expense of time, to reduce the cost?

Then is 50 respondents to low of a figure?
