Is taking undergraduate business courses actually helpful for people who want to sta

I'm 19 years old from Canada. I'm currently in a business administration program and it's my first semester. I would love to start a business one day and I'm questioning wether or not the college courses I'm taking (accounting, microeconomics and marketing) are actually beneficial to someone who wants to start and grow a company.

I'm questioning this because of the amount of people who own businesses who say things along the lines of "I got a degree in business and I don't use anything I learned from my classes"

I'm confused by these statements. For example, Isn't learning accounting helpful? Or do I just need to hire an accountant (Once my company could afford this) and learn how to read business statements so I can make good decisions?

Of course you don't need a degree, you don't need to take accounting, microeconomics and marketing, but is it helpful or could I spend my next four - five years more effectively to become a better business owner?

I think some of what I'm learning is helpful however all of my classes are targeted at people who want to work within companies, not start and run them. Maybe I can get a better education through teaching myself while starting a company, making mistakes and fixing them.

I'm trying to set myself up for future success in business. What information can you give me about taking both paths. (The self taught path or the college path.)

If you think the college path is a better education for starting a business: What courses do you recommend taking and why? What experience do you have that makes you qualified to give information about this?

If you think taking the self taught business owner route will give me a better education for running a company: Why don't you think that the college courses I'm taking are as good of an education as just starting a business now? What experience do you have that makes you qualified to give information about this?

Thank you so much for taking your time to read this. I look forwards to your answers.
