So, I manage a baseball publication and we began the process last week of revisiting some of our business model canvas information and began a discussion about our mission vs. vision statements. Some members believed the two were different items, while others deemed the two to be the same.
My take is that the vision is the overarching reason why we are doing something. The Mission is basically our way of mapping how we get there. For example, here is what we have now.
VISION STATEMENT: Develop a vibrant youth baseball community while growing the amateur footprint of America's pastime throughout the Philadelphia region.
MISSION STATEMENT: Create meaningful baseball journalism to promote, educate, and highlight the sport in the Philadelphia region while maintaining an emphasis on the amateur level.
I guess I have two questions - first, is my assessment of the difference between the two correct? Secondly, how often does your business revisit your vision/mission statements? How often (or how) do you use them?
