How much equity/IOU should I ask for?

So I’m a college student and currently working at a startup for free. It was meant to be an unpaid internship. I like it and I believe in the idea, but after asking on this subreddit, I’m about to ask the founders for equity or IOU since I’m part of the first engineers and not getting paid. I haven’t signed any contract just yet, so I can negotiate to add the equity or IOU clauses to the contract. I’ve never done this before so I have no idea what to ask for exactly. Should I ask for both equity and an IOU or just one? How much money should I ask for? How much equity should I ask for? Any help and advice would be appreciated and I’ll answer any questions you may have. Thanks!
