how late is late to get the stock options grant?

Hi -- I started working at a start up a little over 6 months ago and I still have not gotten my actual stock options grant, basically the documents you get and sign that has the details of the options offer. The original job offer letter has the amount of shares, and says the equity grant will be offered when the board approves it (pretty standard) -- but at some point it just seems like its getting super late for this? Is there a general rule of thumb for long a company should take in squaring the options grant stuff away for their employees? What is the best way to ping/prod my CEO on this?
