Too many AE’s - question

I work for a startup SAAS company who employs 5 AE’s (2 of which are hitting quota). Company just hired an additional 2 AE’s despite majority of the team not hitting their targets and not having their calendars full. Some of the AE’s are worried they’ll lose a chunk of their inbound leads, rightfully so. Has anyone gone through this?
