Has anyone successfully gotten a cold contact investor for their project?

Must be rare to; but has anyone ever gotten an investor (such as an angel investor) to invest in their project with the investor being outside their social circle?
If yes, how did you accomplish this? How did you contact and convince him / her / them? How many others did you try to contract who refused or ignored you before finding the one who invested?
