I work for the government full-time (3 12 hour shifts and an 8 hour shift every other week) in a job I absolutely despise. The benefits are great (pension, amazing healthcare, ridiculously large amounts of PTO....401(k) but NO employer match). The pay for this job (aprox. $57/hr) is much lower than my other jobs. The work is also rather soul-sucking and I despise every moment that I am there. The schedule is very rigid so even though I have a substantial leave bank (>1200 hours) I can only get time off approved one year in advanced and it's hard to come by even then.
The job also offers essential unlimited overtime and one-and-one-half my usual pay although at this point I rarely, if ever, elect to do this.
I have a second job as a nurse practitioner 2 days a week in a clinic. This job pays me on a per-patient basis but the pay is very good (~$700-750 per 8 hour day). While the pay is quite good, if I switched this to a full-time job, my pay would probably decrease as there are only so many patients to go around and each additional day would likely decrease my average pay. As I am a W2 employee, I am eligible for health insurance (but not dental or vision) but my understanding is the plan is not very good.
This job also offers a 401(k) with a 100% employer match up to 4% of your total salary. They offer PTO but the rate of accumulation is atrocious so I would basically say they don't even offer it (literally like 3-5 days per year). This job lets me work whenever I want so I can take time off whenever I need which is a huge plus as my passion is to travel as much as possible.
I have a third job working as an independent contractor as a telehealth nurse practitioner. I am able to work any time of day I want and the pay is fantastic ($100/hr). I do not have to preschedule shifts and can literally log on at any time of day and almost always have near unlimited work. I am technically limited to a 100 hour per month cap, but this is waived almost always. I have been doing this job for 10 months now and it shows no signs of slowing down. The freedom to work whenever I want, wherever I want is amazing. This company is publicly traded and valued at over $1 billion so it seems at least somewhat sustainable.
I have a 4th job as an independent contractor for another telehealth company. This one doesn't pay quite as well ($75-90/hr) and I have to schedule my shifts in advanced (usually at least a day or two). They are only open 12 hours per day, but they do not have any limits on the amount of hours worked and offer very frequent bonus pay opportunities. This company is also publicly traded and seems rather legit as they bill patient's health insurance. I have only been doing this job for about 30 days so it's possible things will change.
The two telehealth jobs obviously offer no benefits outside of money, but they are both jobs that I love with intense flexibility.
Some other considerations. My full-time job does NOT offer any part-time positions so that is not a possibility at all. I have worked there for 12 years so I AM vested and would be eligible for a pension at age 55 (I am currently 34).
