How to determine the efficiency of product development?

This is maybe a dumb question for you ?.
I'd like to have showable "data" of my work efficiency, that can be compared to the efficiency throughout the years.
The problem is that I have no experience with this and have a bit trouble to use my Google findings for my work. I've found something called KPI, that sounds interesting and fitting.
But how I've say...I'm too dumb to find ways, to make this fitting for product development. My work doesn't have a constant time use and quantity of projects.
It would be nice if someone can help to find a way for me and hope that my problem is understandable.
