For freemium apps, should you release premium features for free first, or paywall it

I have an app that is currently 100% free. There is no premium model, but I eventually intend to have a "premium" version that requires a monthly subscription.

I am implementing a feature that has been highly requested by users, and I intend to make it as part of the premium subscription. I would imagine offering a "free taste" of the feature for free users, but get them to convert after they use up their "free taste".

This being said, this feature would require people to submit crowdsourced information, and they would only be able to see crowdsourced info submitted by other people if they have premium. I also do not know if people would use this feature if it was paywalled initially.

Would it leave a bad taste if I made this feature free to begin with, but stick it behind a paywall once I validate that it's something people would use? Should I release it behind the paywall, and risk users not submitting crowdsource information because they can't reap the full benefits?
