Multiple business areas? In need of a little perspective/inspiration.

Hi everyone,

This might be a bit too general a question for this sub; my apologies if it is. I'm in need of some inspiration/perspective and from what I've seen, there are plenty of open-minded people hereabouts who might be able to help me find an angle I haven't considered.

I've always wanted to start and run my own business. I feel like the various qualifications I have gathered and my life experience thus far (early 30s) has always been building towards that goal, but there's a bit of a hitch; I'm not sure what to pursue in terms of a particular business area. I'm at a bit of a crossroads due to how my life has run its course. I've pursued different threads in the past that have given me a varied skillset today.

I have formal qualifications in several fields including IT support and digital marketing, along with informal (and some formal) experience in social media management, local current affairs reporting and music. I've taken courses and gathered plenty of material on how to run a business and I've put together a reasonable social media following across my voluntary/unpaid projects.

I've considered a few different avenues among others:

  • Computer repair business (I've researched this and there may be a gap for one where I live)
  • Digital marketing agency (although I originally had this idea back when such agencies weren't a dime a dozen).
  • Local news company/local current affairs website

So my question is twofold, reddit.

  1. Is it viable in 2021 to run a business that does more than one particular thing at once? All my training and resources gathered over the last decade have focused on pursuing one particular field.
  2. Is there any permutation of the (admittedly limited) information above that might present an opportunity for a good business?

I know this might sound like I'm asking this sub to do the work for me, but I assure you the work is there; I just need some help with how to apply it. I'm willing to expand on things in the comments if need be.

Again I apologise if the question is too vague. Send me your wisdom, Reddit.
