Before starting a business, what are some good strategies to determine who your comp

Before starting a business, what are some good strategies to determine who your competitors are / be aware of the landscape? I'm pretty new at this so taking any and all suggestions. Paid subscriptions? Hiring consultants? Tips for Googling it?

I have some ideas, but don't feel the confidence behind them. So just thought to reach out to the broader community to hear everyone elses thoughts.
