Is a four-year vesting period too short? If so, what is the ideal period?

In the Tech Stars video below, the person suggests that a 4-year vesting period for cofounders is too short as most startup exits take much longer. If this is correct, what on earth should the ideal vesting period be? Is a greater-than-four-year vesting period common?
