How often to pivot/modify the brand in the initial stage?

The concept of pivoting is well known to those who have read "The lean startup". The idea is to assess and adjust with feedback until you reach the right combination of service, branding, etc.

I'm at a stage where I need to seriously reconsider the target market of my social platform. I started out by targeting an entire market and I recently realized that's just plain stupid because of the cold start problem.

So I have a few ideas on who to target, but that will require adjusting the brand identity. I'm a designer so that's not an issue for me and that doesn't cost me anything (well, obviously, besides time).

I was just wondering, for how long should I maintain a single structure and when do I know when adjusting the branding and positioning might be worth it? My service is an online platform custom coded, which means that, for each re-branding, I will have to adjust the code (slightly) as well and that will take me more time than designing the brand.

I'm thinking of following my instinct and putting together all the knowledge I amassed during the years to come up with a branding solution most likely to be successful relative to what's already available in my market.
