I SPENT 3 HOURS ON A PHONE CALL to get a prospect to eventually become a client

I want to know if there’s a way around this.. people often say BUILD RELATIONSHIPS and not introduce your services as the bait in conversations off the bat. Yesterday, I found a prospect on FB and was messaging and then I suggested a call which he was open to doing (but he usually doesn’t do) because I had brief conversation with him.

Pretty friendly guy. The call lasted 3 hours but I just spent that getting to know him instead of making it about me. After maybe the 2 hour mark I then made it known as to what I do and how he may benefit from it. He didn’t mind taking me on to help him but he jokes and says “OH SO YOU ONLY DID THIS TO GET ME AS YOUR CLIENT”... ofcourse it was a yes but I didn’t let him know that lol but now I’m working with him because he was able to tell me the problems he was having not even knowing what my line of work was. Also— his conversation was pretty good so I didn’t mind.

What do you think? Get to know potential clients or should I just come out from the jump and let them know WHY I’m reaching out. I don’t want to lead them on.
