How do people usually go the path of becoming their own boss?

I know it even sounds like a pretty vague question to me that gets asked a lot but I am wondering if people just pick up and decide they're going to start a company. Social media makes it look like anyone can do it and its given me the wrong impression. Do people usually become an expert in some field and only then can they start their own thing? So I guess some examples of companies would be software development, cyber security, landscaping, electrician. Curious of any professions people start businesses in. Thanks if anyone would like to share.
