What would you rate the importance of mobile focused web design on launch?

Hey!

A bit of background, I'm currently working on a startup to help take the difficulty out of long distance relationships. I'm in the midst of development at the moment and wanted to get your insight on whether or not I should be focusing on developing the front end for both mobile and desktop, or just desktop until after the MVP has been launched. I've been developing the front end for desktop only, and while I'm not deeply entrenched in it, it would take effort to retool what I have so far.

So what are your thoughts and experiences with this scenario? Is mobile oriented design important enough for a product to make it in as an MVP requirement?

Edit: Alright, mobile-first design seems like the bet on this. I appreciate the insight!
